Preparation

Opening response

Favor us, Lord, and deliver us.

Lord, come quickly and help us.

Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Lord God, creator of day and night:

to you be praise and glory forever.

As darkness falls you renew your promise

to reveal among us the light of your presence.

By the light of Christ, your living Word,

dispel the darkness of our hearts

that we may walk as children of light

and sing your praise throughout the world.

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God forever.

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful,

let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,

so may your mercy come down upon us

to cleanse our hearts

and set us free to sing your praise

now and forever.

Amen.

Hymn

Jesus, My Lord, Mighty to Save

Charles Wesley

Jesus, my Lord, mighty to save,

What can my hopes withstand,

While thee, my advocate, I have

Enthroned at God’s right hand?

Nature is subject to thy word,

All power to thee is given,

The uncontrolled, almighty Lord

Of hell, and earth, and heaven.

And shall my sins thy will oppose?

Master, thy right maintain;

Oh, let not thy usurping foes,

In me, thy servant, reign.

Come, then and claim me for thine own,

Savior thy right assert,

Come gracious Lord, set up thy throne,

And reign within my heart.

So shall I bless thy pleasing sway,

And, sitting at thy feet,

Thy laws with all my heart obey,

With all my soul submit.

So shall I do thy will below,

As angels do above,

The virtue of thy passion show,

The triumphs of thy love.

Thy love, the conquest more than gains,

To all I shall proclaim,

“Jesus, the King, the Conqueror reigns,

Bow down to Jesus’ name.”

To thee shall earth and hell submit,

And every foe shall fall,

Till death expires beneath thy feet,

And God is all in all.

Confession of sin

Come, Holy Spirit of God,

and search our hearts with the light of Christ.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said:

The first commandment is this:

‘Israel, listen! Our God is the one Lord,

and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart,

with all your being, with all your mind,

and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’

No other commandment is greater than these.

All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.

Amen. Lord, have mercy.

After a period of reflection

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

Lord our God,

in our sin we have avoided your call.

Our love for you is like a morning cloud,

like the dew that goes away early.

Have mercy on us;

deliver us from judgment;

bind up our wounds and revive us;

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

cf Hosea 6

May almighty God,

who sent his Son into the world to save sinners,

bring us his pardon and peace, now and forever.

Amen.

The Word of God

Psalm 22

Refrain:

Don’t be far away, Lord! You are my strength!

My God! My God,

why have you left me all alone?

Why are you so far from saving me—

so far from my anguished groans?

My God, I cry out during the day,

but you don’t answer;

even at nighttime I don’t stop.

You are the holy one, enthroned.

You are Israel’s praise.

Our ancestors trusted you—

they trusted you and you rescued them;

they cried out to you and they were saved;

they trusted you and they weren’t ashamed.

But I’m just a worm, less than human;

insulted by one person, despised by another.

All who see me make fun of me—

they gape, shaking their heads:

“He committed himself to the Lord,

so let God rescue him;

let God deliver him

because God likes him so much.”

But you are the one who pulled me from the womb,

placing me safely at my mother’s breasts.

I was thrown on you from birth;

you’ve been my God

since I was in my mother’s womb.

Please don’t be far from me,

because trouble is near

and there’s no one to help.

Many bulls surround me;

mighty bulls from Bashan encircle me.

They open their mouths at me

like a lion ripping and roaring!

I’m poured out like water.

All my bones have fallen apart.

My heart is like wax;

it melts inside me.

My strength is dried up

like a piece of broken pottery.

My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;

you’ve set me down in the dirt of death.

Dogs surround me;

a pack of evil people circle me like a lion—

oh, my poor hands and feet!

I can count all my bones!

Meanwhile, they just stare at me, watching me.

They divvy up my garments among themselves;

they cast lots for my clothes.

But you, Lord! Don’t be far away!

You are my strength!

Come quick and help me!

Deliver me from the sword.

Deliver my life from the power of the dog.

Save me from the mouth of the lion.

From the horns of the wild oxen

you have answered me!

I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;

I will praise you in the very center of the congregation!

All of you who revere the Lord—praise him!

All of you who are Jacob’s descendants—honor him!

All of you who are all Israel’s offspring—

stand in awe of him!

Because he didn’t despise or detest

the suffering of the one who suffered—

he didn’t hide his face from me.

No, he listened when I cried out to him for help.

I offer praise in the great congregation

because of you;

I will fulfill my promises

in the presence of those who honor God.

Let all those who are suffering eat and be full!

Let all who seek the Lord praise him!

I pray your hearts live forever!

Every part of the earth

will remember and come back to the Lord;

every family among all the nations will worship you.

Because the right to rule belongs to the Lord,

he rules all nations.

Indeed, all the earth’s powerful

will worship him;

all who are descending to the dust

will kneel before him;

my being also lives for him.

Future descendants will serve him;

generations to come will be told about my Lord.

They will proclaim God’s righteousness

to those not yet born,

telling them what God has done.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

Don’t be far away, Lord! You are my strength!

Psalm prayer

Restless with grief and fear,

the abandoned turn to you:

in every hour of trial,

good Lord, deliver us,

O God most holy, God most strong,

whose wisdom is the cross of Christ.

Old Testament reading
2 Kings 24:18-25:12

Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king, and he ruled for eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal; she was Jeremiah’s daughter and was from Libnah. He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes, just as Jehoiakim had done. It was precisely because the Lord was angry with Jerusalem and Judah that he thrust them out of his presence.

Now Zedekiah rebelled against the Babylonian king. So in the ninth year of Zedekiah’s rule, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar attacked Jerusalem with his entire army. He camped beside the city and built a siege wall all around it. The city was under attack until King Zedekiah’s eleventh year. On the ninth day of the month, the famine in the city got so bad that no food remained for the common people. Then the enemy broke into the city. All the soldiers fled by night using the gate between the two walls near the King’s Garden. The Chaldeans were surrounding the city, so the soldiers ran toward the desert plain. But the Chaldean army chased King Zedekiah and caught up with him in the Jericho plains. His entire army deserted him. So the Chaldeans captured the king and brought him back to the Babylonian king, who was at Riblah. There his punishment was determined. Zedekiah’s sons were slaughtered right before his eyes. Then he was blinded, put in bronze chains, and taken off to Babylon.

On the seventh day of the fifth month in the nineteenth year of Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan arrived at Jerusalem. He was the commander of the guard and an official of the Babylonian king. He burned down the Lord’s temple, the royal palace, and all of Jerusalem’s houses. He burned down every important building. The whole Chaldean army under the commander of the guard tore down the walls surrounding Jerusalem. Then Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard exiled the people who were left in the city, those who had already surrendered to Babylon’s king, and the rest of the population. The commander of the guard left some of the land’s poor people behind to work the vineyards and be farmers.

New Testament reading
1 Timothy 5:1-16

Don’t correct an older man, but encourage him like he’s your father; treat younger men like your brothers, treat older women like your mother, and treat younger women like your sisters with appropriate respect.

Take care of widows who are truly needy. But if a particular widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to respect their own family and repay their parents, because this pleases God. A widow who is truly needy and all alone puts her hope in God and keeps on going with requests and prayers, night and day. But a widow who tries to live a life of luxury is dead even while she is alive. Teach these things so that the families will be without fault. But if someone doesn’t provide for their own family, and especially for a member of their household, they have denied the faith. They are worse than those who have no faith.

Put a widow on the list who is older than 60 years old and who was faithful to her husband. She should have a reputation for doing good: raising children, providing hospitality to strangers, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in distress, and dedicating herself to every kind of good thing. But don’t accept younger widows for the list. When their physical desires distract them from Christ, they will want to get married. Then they will be judged for setting aside their earlier commitment. Also, they learn to be lazy by going from house to house. They are not only lazy, but they also become gossips and busybodies, talking about things they shouldn’t. So I want younger widows to marry, have children, and manage their homes so that they won’t give the enemy any reason to slander us. (Some have already turned away to follow Satan.) If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should take care of them and not burden the church, so that it can help other widows who are truly needy.

Silence may be kept.

Gospel canticle
The Magnificat (The Song of Mary)

Refrain:

You show mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, who honors you as God.

With all my heart I glorify the Lord!

In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.

He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.

Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored

because the mighty one has done great things for me.

Holy is his name.

He shows mercy to everyone,

from one generation to the next,

who honors him as God.

He has shown strength with his arm.

He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.

He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones

and lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things

and sent the rich away empty-handed.

He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,

remembering his mercy,

just as he promised to our ancestors,

to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.

Luke 1:46-55

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

You show mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, who honors you as God.

Brief silence.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.
