Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all, to you be glory and praise forever. You founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. In the fullness of time, you made us in your image, and in these last days you have spoken to us in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us, let the light of your love always shine in our hearts, your Spirit ever renew our lives, and your praises ever be on our lips.

1 Kings 8:1-30

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the Israelites, before King Solomon in Jerusalem, so that they could ensure that the ark of the covenant of the LORD would be brought out of the City of David in Zion. All the men of Israel assembled themselves before King Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.

All the elders of Israel came, and the priests carried the ark. The priests and Levites brought up the ark of the LORD, the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy implements that were in the tabernacle. King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel who were assembled before him stood together in front of the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and oxen that they could not be told or numbered.

The priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the house, to the Most Holy Place under the wings of the cherubim. For the cherubim spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark and covered the ark and the poles from above. The poles were so long that the ends of the poles could be seen out in the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen from outside, and they are there to this day. There was nothing in the ark except for the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb when the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites after they had come out of the land of Egypt.

And when the priests came out of the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not continue to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the LORD.

Then Solomon spoke, saying, “The LORD said that He would dwell in the thick darkness. I have surely built You a house to dwell in, a settled place for You to abide in forever.”

Then the king turned around and blessed all the congregation of Israel (and all the congregation of Israel stood), and he said,

“Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who spoke with His mouth to my father David and has with His hand fulfilled His word, saying, ‘Since the day that I brought forth My people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city from any tribe of Israel to build a house where My name might be praised, but I chose David to be over My people Israel.’

“My father David had it in mind to build a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. The LORD said to my father David, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you had good intentions. Nevertheless, you shall not build the house, but your son who will come out of your loins, he shall build the house for My name.’

“The LORD has fulfilled His word that He spoke, and I have been elevated to the position of my father David, to sit on the throne of Israel as the LORD promised, and have built a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. I have set a place there for the ark, which houses the covenant of the LORD which He made with our fathers when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.”

Then Solomon stood in front of the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel and spread his hands toward heaven. and he said,

“LORD God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth below who keeps covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts, who have kept what You promised Your servant David my father. You spoke also with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.

“Therefore, LORD God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, ‘You will not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, so long as your sons take heed to their way, that they walk before Me as you have walked before Me.’ Now, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be fulfilled, which You spoke to Your servant David my father.

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less can this house that I have built? Acts 15:36-16:5

After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit our brothers in every city where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” Barnabas determined to take with them John, who was called Mark. But Paul thought it was not good to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. Then there arose a sharp contention, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brothers to the grace of God. And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Then he came to Derbe and then to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who believed, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted him to travel with him. So he took him and circumcised him, because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to observe, that were set forth by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Old Testament reading

1 Kings 6:1, 11-28

In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Ziv (which is the second month), he began to build the house of the LORD.

Now the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying, “Concerning this house which you are building, if you will walk in My statutes and execute My judgments and keep all My commandments and walk in them, then I will carry out My word with you, which I spoke to David your father, and I will dwell among the people of Israel and will not forsake My people Israel.”

So Solomon built the house and finished it. He built the interior walls of the house with boards of cedar. From the floor of the house to the ceiling, he covered them on the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with planks of fir. He lined twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls, with boards of cedar, and he lined them within, even the inner sanctuary and the Most Holy Place. The house, that is, the nave in front of the inner sanctuary, was forty cubits long. The cedar of the house within had carvings of gourds and open flowers. All was cedar. There was no stone seen.

He prepared the inner sanctuary in the inner part of the house in order to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD. The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high. He overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid the altar of cedar. So Solomon overlaid the interior of the house with pure gold, and he made a partition with gold chains in front of the inner sanctuary, and he overlaid it with gold. He overlaid the whole house with gold as well as the whole altar that was by the inner sanctuary.

Within the inner sanctuary, he made two cherubim from olive wood, each ten cubits high. One wing of the cherub was five cubits, and the other wing was also five cubits. From the furthest part of the one wing to the furthest part of the other was ten cubits. The other cherub was ten cubits. Both the cherubim were the same shape and size. The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was that of the other cherub. He set the cherubim within the inner sanctuary, and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubim, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall, and their wings touched one another in the middle of the house. He overlaid the cherubim with gold.

Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who will also speak to you, saying the same things. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to put on you no greater burden than these necessary things: Abstain from food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from strangled animals, and from blood. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.

So when they were dismissed, they went down to Antioch. And when they had assembled the congregation, they delivered the letter. When they had read it, they rejoiced over the exhortation. Judas and Silas, being prophets themselves, exhorted the brothers with many words and strengthened them. After they had remained there for a time, they were sent off in peace by the brothers to the apostles. But it seemed good to Silas to remain there. And Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
