Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all, to you be glory and praise forever. You founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. In the fullness of time, you made us in your image, and in these last days you have spoken to us in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us, let the light of your love always shine in our hearts, your Spirit ever renew our lives, and your praises ever be on our lips.

1 kings 1:5-31
Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king,” and he assembled chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run before him. His father had not confronted him at any time by asking, “Why have you done this?” He also was a very attractive man, and he was born next after Absalom.
He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they agreed to help him. But Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and David’s mighty men did not join Adonijah.
Adonijah slaughtered sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the Stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants. But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or his brother Solomon.
Therefore Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns and David our lord does not know it? Now please come and let me give you some advice, so that you may save your own life as well as that of your son Solomon. Go to King David and say to him, ‘Did not you, my lord, O king, swear to your handmaid, saying: Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign?’ Then while you are still there talking with the king, I will come in and confirm your words.”
So Bathsheba went to the king’s chamber. Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite ministered to him. Bathsheba bowed and prostrated herself before the king.
And the king said, “What do you want?”
And she said to him, “My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your handmaid, saying: Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. Now, behold, Adonijah reigns, although you, my lord, O king, do not know it. He has slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance and has invited all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited your servant Solomon. And you, my lord, O king, all the eyes of Israel are upon you that you should tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. Otherwise it shall be that when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, I and my son Solomon shall be considered offenders.”
While she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. The king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here,” and when he entered the king’s presence, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne’? For he has gone down this day and has slain oxen, fat cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the guard, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking with him, saying, ‘God save King Adonijah!’ But he has not invited me, your servant, or Zadok the priest or Benaiah the son of Jehoiada or your servant Solomon. Is this thing done by my lord the king, and you have not let your servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
King David answered, “Call Bathsheba to me.” And she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
The king vowed, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all distress, even as I swore to you by the LORD God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead,’ even so will I certainly do this day.”
Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground in reverence to the king and said, “Let my lord King David live forever.”

Now when Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem. “After about four hundred and fifty years, God gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. Then they requested a king. And God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. When He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, of whom He testified, saying, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will fulfill My entire will.’
“From this man’s descendants God has raised a Savior for Israel, Jesus, according to His promise. Before His coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. As John was fulfilling his course, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there is coming One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

today I have become Your Father.’
That He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken in this way:
‘I will give You the holy and sure blessings of David.’
So He says in another Psalm:
‘You will not let Your Holy One see decay.’
“For after David had served by the counsel of God in his own generation, he fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw decay. But He whom God raised up saw no decay.
“Therefore, brothers, let it be known to you that through this Man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by Him everyone who believes is justified from everything from which you could not be justified by the Law of Moses. Therefore beware, lest what is spoken of in the prophets come upon you:
‘Look, you scoffers,
marvel and perish!
For I will perform a work in your days
which you will never believe,
even if someone declares it to you.’ ”
When Paul and Barnabas went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles asked that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.

Compassionate God, as you know each star you have created, so you know the secrets of every heart; in your loving mercy, bring to your table all who are fearful and broken, all who are wounded and needy, that our hungers may be satisfied in the city of your peace; through Christ who is our peace.
Old Testament reading
2 Samuel 24
Again the LORD became angry against Israel, and He incited David against them, saying, “Go and count the people of Israel and Judah.”
The king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Go throughout all of the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beer-sheba, and muster the people so that I may know the number of the people.”
Joab said to the king, “May the LORD your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, in the sight of my lord the king; but why does my lord the king so desire this thing?”
However, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army went out from before the king to register the people of Israel.
They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, south of the city, in the middle of the ravine of Gad toward Jazer. They went toward Gilead to the land of Tahtim Hodshi. Then they went toward Dan Jaan and around to Sidon. They went to the fortress of Tyre and all of the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. They went to the Negev and Beer-sheba.
They went throughout the entire land, and after nine months and twenty days, they came to Jerusalem.
Joab gave the count of the census of the people to the king. There were eight hundred thousand capable men who could draw a sword in Israel, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand.
Now the heart of David struck him after he had counted the people. David said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly by what I have done. Now may the LORD take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have behaved very foolishly.”
When David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, the seer for David, saying, “Go and speak to David: Thus says the LORD: Three options I am laying before you. Choose for yourself one of them, and I will do this to you.”
So Gad came to David and told him. He said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now consider and advise what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”
David said to Gad, “I am very distressed. Let us fall by the hand of the LORD, for His mercy is great. May I not fall by the hand of man.”
So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time. Seventy thousand men from the people died, from Dan to Beer-sheba. When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented from the calamity. He said to the angel who was annihilating the people, “Enough! Now stay your hand.” The angel of the LORD was at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
On seeing the angel who was striking down the people, David said to the LORD, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly. These sheep, what have they done? Please, let your hand be against me and against the house of my father.”
Gad came to David that day and said to him, “Go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” So David went up according to the word of Gad, as the LORD commanded. When Araunah looked and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed low to the king with his face on the ground.
Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
David replied, “To purchase the threshing floor from you in order to build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague may be averted from the people.”
Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Here are the oxen for the burnt offering and the threshing sledges and yokes of the oxen for wood. Everything, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” Araunah also said to the king, “May the LORD your God be favorable toward you.”
However, the king said to Araunah, “No, for I will certainly purchase from you for a fair price. I will not offer up to the LORD burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
So David purchased the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. David built an altar to the LORD there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the land pleaded with the LORD, and the plague was averted from Israel.

New Testament reading
Acts 13:1-12
In the church that was in Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they worshipped the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John as an assistant.
When they had gone through the whole island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a Jewish false prophet, whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (which is his name by interpretation) opposed them, trying to divert the proconsul from the faith. Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him and said, “You son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, full of deceit and of all fraud, will you not cease perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.”
Immediately mist and darkness fell on him, and he went about seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed and was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

Luke 1:68-79
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for He has visited and redeemed His people,
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of His servant David,
as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets of long ago,
that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us,
to perform the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember His holy covenant,
the oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
to grant us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies,
might serve Him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;
for you will go before the presence of the Lord to prepare His ways,
to give knowledge of salvation to His people

through the tender mercy of our God,
