Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all, to you be glory and praise forever. You founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. In the fullness of time, you made us in your image, and in these last days you have spoken to us in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us, let the light of your love always shine in our hearts, your Spirit ever renew our lives, and your praises ever be on our lips.

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Psalm prayer

Old Testament reading

Judges 8:22-35

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you, and your son, and your grandson, for you have saved us from the hands of Midian.”

Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you. The LORD will rule over you.” Gideon continued, “I have a request to make of you, that each man would give me an earring from his spoils.” (Their enemy had golden earrings because they were Ishmaelites.)

They said, “We will certainly give them.” So they spread out a cloak, and each man threw a ring of his spoils there. The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold. This was in addition to the crescent-shaped ornaments, jewelry, and purple clothing worn by the kings of Midian, as well as the chains hanging on the necks of their camels. Gideon used these things to make an ephod. He put it in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel prostituted themselves to it there. It became a snare to Gideon and his family.

The Midianites were humbled before the Israelites and did not lift their heads high again. The land had peace for forty years in the days of Gideon.

Jerub-Baal son of Joash went to his house and lived there. Gideon had seventy sons, for he had many wives. His concubine who lived in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech. Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age, and he was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

After Gideon died, the Israelites turned again to prostitute themselves with the Baals. They made Baal-Berith their god. The Israelites did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of their enemies around them, and they did not keep faith with the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon), for all the good he had done for Israel.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

And when he has found it, he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing. Acts 27:1-12

When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan Regiment. Boarding a ship from Adramyttium, we put out to sea, meaning to sail along the coasts of Asia. Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, was with us.

The next day we landed at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him leave to go to his friends and be given care. From there we put out to sea and sailed under the leeward side of Cyprus, because the winds were against us. Sailing across the sea off of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing to Italy, and he put us on board. We sailed slowly for many days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind did not allow us to proceed, we sailed under the leeward side of Crete off Salmone. Sailing past it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

As much time had been lost and as the voyage was now dangerous, because the Day of Atonement was already over, Paul advised them, saying, “Men, I perceive that this voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also of our lives.” But the centurion was persuaded more by the captain and the owner of the ship than by what Paul said. Since the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority decided to sail on from there, if somehow we might reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete, facing southwest and northwest, and winter there.
