Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, creator God, to you be praise and glory forever. As your Spirit moved over the face of the waters, bringing light and life to your creation, pour out your Spirit on us today that we may walk as children of light and by your grace reveal your presence.

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.

Genesis 11:1-9

Then they said, “Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top will reach to heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men built. And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; now nothing that they propose to do will be impossible for them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. Therefore the name of it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. From there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Acts 10:34-48

Then Peter began to speak, saying, “Truthfully, I perceive that God is no respecter of persons. But in every nation he who fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. The word which He sent to the Israelites, preaching peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, the word, which you know, that was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

“We are witnesses of all that He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. But God raised Him on the third day and presented Him publicly, not to all the people, but to witnesses previously chosen by God, to us who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets bear witness that whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins through His name.”

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. All the believers of the circumcision who had come with Peter were astonished, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in other tongues and magnifying God.

Then Peter continued, “Can anyone forbid water for baptizing these, who have received the Holy Spirit as we have?” So he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for He has visited and redeemed His people,

Moses said to the Gadites and to the Reubenites, “Will your brothers go to war, and you will dwell here? And why would you discourage the hearts of the Israelites from going over into the land which the LORD has given to them? Thus your fathers did, when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. When they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and saw the land, they discouraged the hearts of the Israelites so they would not go into the land which the LORD had given them. And the anger of the LORD was inflamed on that day, and He swore, saying, ‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and older, will see the ground which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they did not completely follow Me, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, because they completely followed the LORD.’ The anger of the LORD was inflamed against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that did evil in the eyes of the LORD was finished.

“And behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to increase more the burning anger of the LORD toward Israel. If you turn away from following Him, He will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”

They approached him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our children. But we ourselves will be armed, ready before the Israelites, until we have brought them to their place. Our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. We will not return to our houses until all the Israelites have inherited their inheritance. We will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan or beyond, because our inheritance fell to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.”

Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will be armed before the LORD for war, and all of you, each armed, will go over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven out His enemies from before Him and the land is subdued before the LORD, then after that you will return and be exempt before the LORD and before Israel, and this land will be your possession before the LORD.

“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build for yourselves cities for your children and folds for your sheep, and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”

The Gadites and the Reubenites spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. Our children, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead, but your servants will cross over, each man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says.”

When the apostles returned, they told Jesus all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. When the day began to end, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowds away, so they can go into the towns and surrounding countryside and lodge and get food. For we are in a deserted place here.”

He said to them, “You give them something to eat.”

They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.” There were about five thousand men.

But He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.” They did so, and made them all sit down. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of broken pieces that remained were collected.

Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and he took Joshua, and he caused him to stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the assembly. And he laid his hands on him and commanded him as the LORD spoke by the hand of Moses.

Luke 8:40-56

When Jesus returned, the crowd gladly received Him, for they were all waiting for Him. Then a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell down at Jesus’ feet, and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As He went, the people crowded Him. And a woman having a hemorrhage for twelve years, who had spent all her living on physicians, but could not be healed by anyone, came behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment. And immediately her hemorrhage dried up.

Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”

When everyone denied it, Peter and those who were with Him said, “Master, the crowds are pressing against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”

But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I perceive that power has gone out from Me.”

When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling. And falling down before Him, she declared to Him before all the people why she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. Then He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer. Your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

While He was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler’s house came, saying to Jairus, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”

But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, “Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be made well.”

When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, John and James, and the father and mother of the girl. All wept and mourned for her. But He said, “Do not weep. She is not dead but sleeping.”

They laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all outside and took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” Her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He told them to give her food. Her parents were astonished, but He commanded them to tell no one what had happened.
