Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all, to you be glory and praise forever. You founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. In the fullness of time, you made us in your image, and in these last days you have spoken to us in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us, let the light of your love always shine in our hearts, your Spirit ever renew our lives, and your praises ever be on our lips.

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

Now Joseph dreamed a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. He said to them, “Please listen to this dream which I have dreamed. Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf rose up and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves stood around it and bowed down to my sheaf.”

His brothers said to him, “Will you really reign over us, or will you really have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words.

Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing to me.”

But when he told it to his father and his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers really come to bow down ourselves to you to the ground?” So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it, and progressed in Judaism above many of my equals in my own heritage, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who set me apart since I was in my mother’s womb and called me by His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the nations, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me. But I went into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

After three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter and stayed with him for fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!

Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia and was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ. They had heard only, “He who persecuted us in times past now preaches the faith which he once destroyed.” And they glorified God because of me.

Genesis 35

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, dwell there, and there make an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your clothes. Let us arise and go up to Bethel, and there I will make an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their possession and all their earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was near Shechem. As they traveled, the terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. There he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because God had appeared to him there when he fled from his brother.

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried beneath Bethel under the oak. So it was called Allon Bakuth.

God appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Paddan Aram and blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be called Jacob any more, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will come from you, and kings shall come forth from you. The land that I gave Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your descendants after you I will give the land.” Then God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him.

Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

They journeyed from Bethel, and when they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had a difficult labor. When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear. You will have this son also.” As her soul was departing (for she died), she called his name Ben-Oni, but his father called him Benjamin.

Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. Jacob set a pillar on her grave. It is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. When Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard about it.

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

The sons of Leah were

Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun.

The sons of Rachel were

Joseph and Benjamin.

And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were

Dan and Naphtali.

And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were

Gad and Asher.

These are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Paddan Aram.

Jacob came back to Isaac his father in Mamre of Kiriath-arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. And Isaac breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon, our beloved fellow laborer, and to beloved Apphia, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God, always mentioning you in my prayers, whenever I hear of your love and faith, which you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, that the sharing of your faith may be most effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you from Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and encouragement on account of your love, because the hearts of the saints are refreshed through you, brother.

Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you to do that which is proper, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you —I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ — I appeal to you on behalf of my son Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment, who in the past was unprofitable to you, but now he is profitable to you and to me.

I have sent him back. Therefore receive him as my own heart. I wanted to keep him with me, so that in your place he might serve me during my imprisonment for the gospel. But without your consent I would do nothing, so that your goodness would not be forced, but given willingly. Perhaps this was why he departed for a while, that you might receive him forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the body and in the Lord.

If then you consider me a partner, receive him as you would me. If he wronged you or owes you anything, charge this to my account. I, Paul, have written this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me even your own self. Yes, brother, help me rejoice in the Lord, refresh my heart in the Lord. Being convinced of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will also do more than I say.

But, in addition, prepare also lodging for me, for I hope that through your prayers I shall be graciously restored to you.

Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow laborers.
