Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all, to you be glory and praise forever. You founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. In the fullness of time, you made us in your image, and in these last days you have spoken to us in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us, let the light of your love always shine in our hearts, your Spirit ever renew our lives, and your praises ever be on our lips.

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

Genesis 31:1-24

Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and he has gotten all his wealth from what was our father’s.” Jacob saw the look of Laban and saw he was not congenial toward him as before.

Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, to your family, and I will be with you.”

So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field where his flock was, and said to them, “I see your father’s demeanor, that it is not congenial toward me as before, but the God of my father has been with me. Rachel and Leah answered him, “Is there any portion or inheritance left for us in our father’s house? Are we not seen by him as foreigners? For he has sold us and has completely spent our money also. For all the riches which God has taken from our father are ours and our children’s. Now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.”

Then Jacob rose up and set his sons and his wives on camels. Then he carried away all his livestock and all his goods which he had obtained, his acquired livestock which he had gotten in Paddan Aram, in order to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.

When Laban went to shear his sheep, Rachel stole the household idols that were her father’s. Jacob also deceived Laban the Syrian by not telling him that he was fleeing. So Jacob fled with all that he had, and he rose up and passed over the river and headed toward the mountains of Gilead.

Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled. He took his kinsmen with him and pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the mountains of Gilead. But God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night and said to him, “Take care that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.”

Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, conceived again and gave Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “With great wrestling have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed.” So she called his name Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as a wife. Zilpah, Leah’s maid, gave Jacob a son. Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she called his name Gad.

Zilpah, Leah’s maid, gave Jacob a second son. Then Leah said, “Happy am I, for women will call me happy.” So she called his name Asher.

At the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

Leah said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?”

So Rachel said, “All right, he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”

When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep with me, because I have paid for you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he slept with her that night.

God listened to Leah, and she conceived and gave Jacob a fifth son. Leah said, “God has given me my reward because I have given my maid to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar.

Leah conceived again and gave Jacob a sixth son. Leah said, “God has given me a good gift. Now my husband will dwell with me, because I have given him six sons.” So she called his name Zebulun.

God of life and love, whose Son was victorious over sin and death, make us alive with his life, that the whole world may resound with your praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Old Testament reading

Job 38:1-21

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

“Who is this who darkens counsel
by words without knowledge?
Prepare yourself like a man;
for I will question you,
and you shall answer Me.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Declare, if you have understanding.
Who has determined its measurements, if you know?
Or who has stretched the line upon it?
To what are its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together,
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who shut up the sea with doors
when it broke forth and went out of the womb?
When I made the cloud its garment,
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
and broke up for it My decreed place,
and set bars and doors,
and said, ‘This far you will come but no farther,
and here your proud waves will be stopped’?

“Have you commanded the morning in your days,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth,
that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
It is turned like clay by the seal,
and it stands out as a garment.
From the wicked their light is withheld,
and the high arm will be broken.

“Have you entered into the springs of the sea?

Have the gates of death been opened to you?
Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have you perceived the breadth of the earth?
Declare, if you know it all.

“Where is the path where light dwells?
And as for darkness, where is its place,
that you should take it to its boundary,
and that you should know the paths to its house?
Do you know it because you were born then,
or because the number of your days is many?”

Colossians 1:15-20

He is the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of every creature. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they are thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers.
