Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, king of the nations, to you be praise and glory forever. From the rising of the sun to its setting, your name is proclaimed in all the world. As the Sun of Righteousness dawns in our hearts, anoint our lips with the seal of your Spirit that we may witness to your gospel and sing your praise in all the earth.
Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Genesis 16

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, and she had a maidservant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from having children. Please go in to my maid; it may be that I will obtain children through her.”

Abram listened to Sarai. So after Abram had been living for ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, his wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. He went in to Hagar, and she conceived.

When she saw that she had conceived, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid into your arms; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. May the LORD judge between you and me.”

But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her presence.

The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness. It was the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from and where are you going?”

And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

Then the angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority.” The angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly so that they will be too many to count.”

Then the angel of the LORD said to her,

“Behold, you are pregnant
and will bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the LORD has heard your affliction.
He will be a wild man;
his hand will be against every man,
and every man’s hand will be against him.
And he will dwell
in the presence of all his brothers.”

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are the God who sees,” for she said, “Have I now looked on Him who sees me?” Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.

So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the son she bore Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

New Testament reading

Matthew 26:57-75

Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled. But Peter followed Him from afar to the high priest’s courtyard and went in, and sat with the servants to see the end.

The chief priests and the elders and the entire Sanhedrin searched for false witness against Jesus to put Him to death, but they found none. Yes, though many false witnesses came forward, they found none.

At last two false witnesses came forward and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”

Then the high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”

Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further need do we have for witnesses? See, now you have heard His blasphemy. What do you think?”

They answered, “He is guilty unto death.”

Then they spit in His face and struck Him. And others slapped Him with the palms of their hands, saying, “Prophesy to us, You Christ! Who is it that struck You?”

Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

Then when he went out onto the porch, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man.”

After a while those who stood by came to Peter and said, “Surely you also are one of them, for your accent betrays you.”

Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and he swore, “I do not know the Man.”

Then immediately a cock crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken, “Before a cock crows, you will deny Me three times.” Then he went out and wept bitterly.

Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for He has visited and redeemed His people,

As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, horror and great darkness fell on him. Then He said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will live as strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. But I will judge the nation that they serve, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. As for you, you will go to your fathers in peace and you will be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation, your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

When the sun went down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot with a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great Euphrates River — the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

Genesis 14

In the days that Amraphel was king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goyim, they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). All these were joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea). For twelve years they had served Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, and the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim, and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh) and conquered all the country of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who lived in Hazezon Tamar.

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out, and they joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim against Kedorlaomer, the king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell in them, and the rest fled to the hill country. Then they took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and departed. They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who lived in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way.

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshkol and Aner, and these were allies with Abram. When Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants born in his own house, and pursued them as far as Dan. During the night he divided his men to attack them and defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. He brought back all the possessions, along with his relative Lot and his possessions, and also the women and the people.

After his return from the defeat of Kedorlaomer and the kings who had joined with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth;
and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and take the goods for yourself.”

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing that is yours, not a thread or a sandal strap; lest you say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will accept only that which my men have eaten and the portion that belongs to the men who went with me, Aner, Eshkol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion.”

Matthew 26:36-46

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray close by.” He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then He said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Wait here, and keep watch with Me.”

He went a little farther, and falling on His face, He prayed, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, could you not keep watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

He went away a second time and prayed, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”

Again, He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, He went away and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. Look, he who betrays Me is at hand.”
