O LORD, don’t your eyes look on truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return.
Then I said, “Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they don’t know the LORD’s way, nor the law of their God. I will go to the great men and will speak to them, for they know the way of the LORD, and the law of their God.” But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. “Go up on her walls, and destroy, but don’t make a full end. Take away her branches, for they are not the LORD’s. For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me,” says the LORD.
They have denied the LORD, and said, “It is not he. Evil won’t come on us. We won’t see sword or famine. The prophets will become wind, and the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.”
Therefore the LORD, the God of Armies says, “Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them. Behold, I will bring a nation on you from far away, house of Israel,” says the LORD. “It is a mighty nation. It is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you don’t know and don’t understand what they say. Their quiver is an open tomb. They are all mighty men. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. A certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, another steps down before me.”

Now that day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat.”
He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’”
Then they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your mat and walk’?”
But he who was healed didn’t know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, so I am working, too.”
