and my mouth will declare your praise.
Send your Holy Spirit upon us,

Prayer of thanksgiving
Blessed are you, creator God, to you be praise and glory forever. As your Spirit moved over the face of the waters, bringing light and life to your creation, pour out your Spirit on us today that we may walk as children of light and by your grace reveal your presence.
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.
The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and forever.

Confession of Sin
When we cry to the LORD in our trouble,

Numbers 24
And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go as other times to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling in their tents by their tribes, and the Spirit of God came on him. He took up his proverb and said:
“Balaam the son of Beor has said,
and the man whose eyes are open has said,
he has said, who heard the words of God,
who saw the vision of the Almighty,
falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
“How lovely are your tents, O Jacob,
and your tabernacles, O Israel!
“Like palm trees are they spread out,
like gardens by the river’s side,
like the aloe plant, which the LORD has planted,
and like cedar trees beside the waters.
He will pour the water out of his buckets,
and his seed will be in many waters.
“His king will be higher than Agag,
and his kingdom will be exalted.
“God brings him out of Egypt;
he has the horns of a wild ox;

The anger of Balak was inflamed against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. And Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times. Now flee to your own place. I thought to promote you to great honor. But certainly, the LORD has kept you back from honor.”
Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not speak to your messengers which you sent to me, saying, ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the mouth of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own mind. But what the LORD speaks, I will speak’? And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the latter days.”
He took up his parable and said:
“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
and the oracle of the man whose eyes are open;
the oracle of the one hearing the words of God,
and knowing the knowledge of the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
“I will see him, but not now;
I will behold him, but not near;
a star will come out of Jacob,
and a scepter will rise out of Israel,
and will crush the borderlands of Moab,
and destroy all the Shethites.
Edom will be a possession,
and Seir, a possession of its enemies,
while Israel does valiantly.
One out of Jacob shall have dominion,
and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Then he looked on Amalek; he took up his proverb and said:
“Amalek was the first of the nations,
but his end will be that he perishes forever.”
He looked on the Kenites and took up his proverb and said:
“Strong is your dwelling place,
and you put your nest in a rock;
nevertheless the Kenite will be wasted.
How long until Ashur carries you away captive?”
He took up his proverb and said:
“Alas, who will live when God does this?
And ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus
and will afflict Ashur and will afflict Eber,
and he also will perish forever.”
Balaam rose up and went and returned to his place, and Balak also went his way.

Luke 8:26-39
They sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is across from Galilee. When He stepped out on land, a man from the city who had demons for a long time met Him. He wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I plead with You, do not torment me.” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It often had seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles. But he broke the shackles and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. And they begged Him not to command them to go out into the abyss.
There was a large herd of swine feeding on the mountain. They begged Him to permit them to enter them, and He permitted them. Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed by demons was healed. Then the whole crowd from the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So He went into the boat and returned.
Now the man from whom the demons had departed asked Him if he could stay with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” So he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Luke 1:68-79
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for He has visited and redeemed His people,
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of His servant David,
as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets of long ago,
that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us,
to perform the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember His holy covenant,
the oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
to grant us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies,
might serve Him without fear,

The Apostle’s Creed
Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:
I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Savior Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Lord’s Prayer
Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Savior taught us, so we pray
