Prayer of thanksgiving
Blessed are you, Lord God of our salvation, to you be praise and glory forever. As once you ransomed your people from Egypt and led them to freedom in the promised land, so now you have delivered us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your risen Son. May we, the first fruits of your new creation, rejoice in this new day you have made, and praise you for your mighty acts.
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.
The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and forever.

Confession of Sin
Come, Holy Spirit of God,
and search our hearts with the light of Christ.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said:
“The first of all the commandments is, ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. After a period of reflection
Come, let us return to the Lord and say:
Lord our God, in our sin, we have avoided your call. Our faithfulness is like a morning cloud, and like the early dew, it goes away. Have mercy on us; deliver us from judgment; bind up our wounds and revive us; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Creator God, may every breath we take be for your glory, may every footstep show you as our way, that, trusting in your presence in this world, we may, beyond this life, still be with you where you are alive and reign forever and ever.
Old Testament reading
Exodus 32:15-34
Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of testimony in his hand. The tablets were written on both their sides. They were written on one side and on the other. The tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing, engraved on the tablets.
When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.”
But he said:
“It is not the sound of those who shout for victory,
or is it the sound of those who cry because of being overcome,
but I hear the sound of singing.”
As soon as he came near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing, and Moses’ anger burned, so he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the bottom of the mountain. Then he took the calf which they had made and burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.
Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought so great a sin upon them?”
Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn. You know that the people are set on evil. For they said to me, ‘Make a god for us who will go before us, for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and then I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
Now when Moses saw the people were in a frenzy, for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies, then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is on the LORD’s side, come to me.” And all the Levites gathered themselves together around him.
He said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Every man fasten his sword on his side, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.’ ” The Levites did according to the word of Moses, and about three thousand men of the people died that day. For Moses had said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, that He may bestow a blessing on you this day, for every man opposes his son and his brother.”
On the next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin, and now I will go up to the LORD. Perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”
Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Oh, this people has committed a great sin and have made a god of gold for themselves. Yet now, if You will, forgive their sin, but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. But go now, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My angel will go before you. Nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will indeed punish them for their sin.”

Luke 3:1-14
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Caesar Tiberius, Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip was tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Traconitis, and Lysanias was the tetrarch of Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He came into the region surrounding the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
make His paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled
and every mountain and hill shall be brought low;
and the crooked shall be made straight
and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”
Then he said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruit worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is put to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
The people asked him, “What then must we do?”
John answered, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none. And he who has food, let him do likewise.”
Then tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
He said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed you.”
Then the soldiers likewise demanded of him, “And what must we do?”
He said to them, “Do no violence to anyone nor accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.”

Luke 1:68-79
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for He has visited and redeemed His people,
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of His servant David,

and from the hand of all who hate us,
to perform the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember His holy covenant,

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:
I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
