Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Lord God, creator of day and night:
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As darkness falls you renew your promise
to reveal among us the light of your presence.
By the light of Christ, your living Word,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
that we may walk as children of light
and sing your praise throughout the world.

Confession of sin

The LORD is merciful and gracious,

Old Testament reading

Proverbs 22:1-16

A good name is more desirable than great riches;
favor is better than silver and gold.

The rich and the poor have this in common:
The LORD is Maker of them all.

The prudent see danger and take cover,
but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.

The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD
are wealth and honor and life.

Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse;
he who guards his soul stays far from them.

Train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.

The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is slave to the lender.

He who sows injustice will reap disaster,

Mark 7:31-37

Then Jesus left the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. Some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged Jesus to place His hand on him.

So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue. And looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”). Immediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more He ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it. The people were utterly astonished and said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”

Luke 1:46-55

𝙍: Come, let us return to the Lord, for our God will freely pardon.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Thanksgiving and intercession

Thanksgiving may be made for the day.

Those who work for reconciliation
All whose lives are devastated by war and civil strife
Prisoners, refugees and homeless people

Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
