Opening response

Lord, open our lips

and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, creator of all,

to you be glory and praise forever.

You founded the earth in the beginning

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

In the fullness of time you made us in your image,

and in these last days you have spoken to us

in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us

let the light of your love always shine in our hearts,

your Spirit ever renew our lives

and your praises ever be on our lips.

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God forever.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;

let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,

so may the light of your presence, O God,

set our hearts on fire with love for you;

now and forever.

Amen.

Hymn

God of Unbounded Power

Charles Wesley

God of unbounded power,

God of unwearied love,

Be present in our dangerous hour

Our danger to remove:

Jesus, Jehovah, Lord,

Thy wonted aid we claim;

Not trusting in our bow or sword,

But in thy saving name!

Our lives are hid with thine,

Our hairs are numbered all,

Nor can without the will divine

One worthless sparrow fall.

And shall a nation bleed,

And shall a kingdom fail,

While thou, O Christ, art Lord and head

Over heaven and earth and hell?

Beneath thy wings secure,

In patience we possess

Our souls, and quietly endure

Whatever our God decrees.

Teach us to understand

The thunder of thy power,

And thus, O Lord, to see thy hand,

Thy truth and love adore.

Escaped the hostile sword,

O may we fly to thee,

And find in our redeeming Lord

Our life and liberty.

Our strength and righteousness,

O let us hold thee fast,

With confidence divine, and peace

That shall forever last.

Confession of sin

O King enthroned on high,

filling the earth with your glory:

holy is your name,

Lord God almighty.

A time of silence and self-examination may be kept.

In our sinfulness we cry to you

to take our guilt away,

and to cleanse our lips to speak your word,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the God of all healing and forgiveness

draw us to himself,

and cleanse us from all our sins

that we may behold the glory of his Son,

the Word made flesh,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Word of God

Psalm 17

Refrain:

Lord, my justice comes from you.

Listen to what’s right, Lord;

pay attention to my cry!

Listen closely to my prayer;

it’s spoken by lips that don’t lie!

My justice comes from you;

let your eyes see what is right!

You have examined my heart,

testing me at night.

You’ve looked me over closely,

but haven’t found anything wrong.

My mouth doesn’t sin.

But these other people’s deeds?

I have avoided such violent ways

by the command from your lips.

My steps are set firmly on your paths;

my feet haven’t slipped.

I cry out to you because you answer me.

So tilt your ears toward me now—

listen to what I’m saying!

Manifest your faithful love in amazing ways

because you are the one

who saves those who take refuge in you,

saving them from their attackers

by your strong hand.

Watch me with the very pupil of your eye!

Hide me in the protection of your wings,

away from the wicked

who are out to get me,

away from my deadly enemies

who are all around me!

They have no pity;

their mouths speak arrogantly.

They track me down—

suddenly, they surround me!

They make their plans to put me in the dirt.

They are like a lion eager to rip its prey;

they are like a strong young lion lying in wait.

Get up, Lord!

Confront them!

Bring them down!

Rescue my life from the wicked—

use your sword!

Rescue me from these people—

use your own hands, Lord!

Rescue me from these people

whose only possession is their fleeting life.

But fill the stomachs of your cherished ones;

let their children be filled full

so that they have leftovers enough for their babies.

But me? I will see your face in righteousness;

when I awake, I will be filled full by seeing your image.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

Lord, my justice comes from you.

Psalm prayer

Generous Lord,

deliver us from all envious thoughts,

and when we are tempted by the desire for wealth,

let us see your face;

for your abundance is enough to clothe our lack;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 19

Refrain:

The Lord’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes.

Heaven is declaring God’s glory;

the sky is proclaiming his handiwork.

One day gushes the news to the next,

and one night informs another what needs to be known.

Of course, there’s no speech, no words—

their voices can’t be heard—

but their sound extends throughout the world;

their words reach the ends of the earth.

God has made a tent in heaven for the sun.

The sun is like a groom

coming out of his honeymoon suite;

like a warrior, it thrills at running its course.

It rises in one end of the sky;

its circuit is complete at the other.

Nothing escapes its heat.

The Lord’s Instruction is perfect,

reviving one’s very being.

The Lord’s laws are faithful,

making naive people wise.

The Lord’s regulations are right,

gladdening the heart.

The Lord’s commands are pure,

giving light to the eyes.

Honoring the Lord is correct,

lasting forever.

The Lord’s judgments are true.

All of these are righteous!

They are more desirable than gold—

than tons of pure gold!

They are sweeter than honey—

even dripping off the honeycomb!

No doubt about it:

your servant is enlightened by them;

there is great reward in keeping them.

But can anyone know

what they’ve accidentally done wrong?

Clear me of any unknown sin

and save your servant from willful sins.

Don’t let them rule me.

Then I’ll be completely blameless;

I’ll be innocent of great wrongdoing.

Let the words of my mouth

and the meditations of my heart

be pleasing to you,

Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

The Lord’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes.

Psalm prayer

Christ, the sun of righteousness,

rise in our hearts this day,

enfold us in the brightness of your love

and bear us at the last to heaven’s horizon;

for your love’s sake.

Old Testament reading
2 Chronicles 35:20-36:10

After all of these things, when Josiah had finished restoring the temple, Egypt’s King Neco marched against Carchemish by the Euphrates, and Josiah marched out against him. But Neco sent messengers to Josiah. “What do you want with me, king of Judah?” he asked. “I haven’t come to attack you today. I’m after the dynasty that wars with me. God told me to hurry, and he is on my side. Get out of God’s way, or he will destroy you.”

But Josiah wouldn’t turn back. Instead, he camouflaged himself in preparation for battle, refusing to listen to Neco’s words from God’s own mouth, and went to fight Neco on the plain of Megiddo. When archers shot King Josiah, he said to his servants, “Take me away; I’m badly wounded!” So his servants took him out of his chariot, placed him in another one, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died and was buried in the tombs of his ancestors. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. Jeremiah composed a funeral song for Josiah, and to this day every singer, man or woman, continues to remember Josiah in their funeral songs. They are now traditional in Israel and are written down among the funeral songs.

The rest of Josiah’s deeds, including his faithfulness in acting according to what is written in the Lord’s Instruction, and everything else he did, from beginning to end, are written in the official records of Israel’s and Judah’s kings.

The people of the land took Jehoahaz, Josiah’s son, and made him the next king in Jerusalem. Jehoahaz was 23 years old when he became king, and he ruled for three months in Jerusalem. The king of Egypt removed him from office in Jerusalem. The Egyptian king imposed a fine on the land totaling one hundred kikkars of silver and one kikkar of gold. Then the king of Egypt made Jehoahaz’s brother Eliakim king of Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. Neco took his brother Jehoahaz prisoner and carried him off to Egypt.

Jehoiakim was 25 years old when he became king, and he ruled for eleven years in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes. Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar attacked him, bound him with bronze chains, and took him to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar also took some equipment from the Lord’s temple to Babylon and placed them in his own temple there. The rest of Jehoiakim’s deeds, including his detestable practices and all that was charged against him, are written in the official records of Israel’s and Judah’s kings. His son Jehoiachin succeeded him as king.

Jehoiachin was 18 years old when he became king, and he ruled for three months in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes. In the springtime, King Nebuchadnezzar sent for him to be brought to Babylon, along with valuable equipment from the Lord’s temple. Then he made Zedekiah his uncle the next king of Judah and Jerusalem.

Silence may be kept.

New Testament reading
John 16:16-22

Soon you won’t be able to see me; soon after that, you will see me.”

Some of Jesus’ disciples said to each other, “What does he mean: ‘Soon you won’t see me, and soon after that you will see me’ and ‘Because I’m going to the Father’? What does he mean by ‘soon’? We don’t understand what he’s talking about.”

Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, so he said, “Are you trying to find out from each other what I meant when I said, ‘Soon you won’t see me, and soon after that you will see me’? I assure you that you will cry and lament, and the world will be happy. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman gives birth, she has pain because her time has come. But when the child is born, she no longer remembers her distress because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. In the same way, you have sorrow now; but I will see you again, and you will be overjoyed. No one takes away your joy.

Silence may be kept.

Gospel canticle
The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah)

Refrain:

You have shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and remembered your holy covenant.

Bless the Lord God of Israel

because he has come to help and has delivered his people.

He has raised up a mighty savior for us in his servant David’s house,

just as he said through the mouths of his holy prophets long ago.

He has brought salvation from our enemies

and from the power of all those who hate us.

He has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,

and remembered his holy covenant,

the solemn pledge he made to our ancestor Abraham.

He has granted that we would be rescued

from the power of our enemies

so that we could serve him without fear,

in holiness and righteousness in God’s eyes,

for as long as we live.

You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High,

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way.

You will tell his people how to be saved

through the forgiveness of their sins.

Because of our God’s deep compassion,

the dawn from heaven will break upon us,

to give light to those who are sitting in darkness

and in the shadow of death,

to guide us on the path of peace.”

Luke 1:68-79

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain:

You have shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and remembered your holy covenant.

Brief silence.

The Apostle’s Creed

Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Collect of the day

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,

to your faithful people pardon and peace,

that they may be cleansed from all their sins

and serve you with a quiet mind;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Savior taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and forever.

Amen.

The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil, and keep us in eternal life.

Amen.
